12.03.1112.03.11 Carterton FC 2 v Oxford City 4
A top of the table clash that lived up to its potential. Other than the
final score it was by far the best match of the season with outstanding play
by both teams. Carterton unfortunately conceded an early goal from a corner
but that did not deter them from playing some great football. All that was
missing was the goal! Both teams played some fantastic football particularly
Nia Richards and Megan Glyn in the centre. Bonita Penn was at her best with
strong challenges and tireless running. A well deserved goal by Lydia Miles
finally came after a terrific build-up by all the team. This advantage was
immediately lost when Oxford scored practically from the kick-off. The first
half ended a very unfair 1-2.
Carterton again had the majority of the ball in the second half and Lauren
Major drew the game level. Beccci Hodgson and Meagan Hill both executed some
extremely timely tackles with Molly Parker as always doing more than is
asked of her in any position. Hayley Wrightson was very strong this half
tackling strong and reading the game well. Gaynor Eeles and Jade Pitts were
so strong at the back rarely letting anything pass and continuously shouting
support for the rest of the team. Sarah Coles made some outstanding saves
throughout the game but was sadly beaten by two breakaway runs. Gaynor was
named a well deserved Girl of the Game but all the girls deserved a medal.
Well done to you all
06.03.11 Carterton FC 0 Marston Saints Angles 3
It has been sometime since I’ve had the opportunity to write the match
report for the Carterton Girls Team, due to a mixture of cycling
commitments (poor excuse) and a 6 month posting to Bahrain (good excuse).
The last time I wrote I think it was for the under 14 Team. So what’s
changed, well there are some new players, the fact that most of them are
now taller than me, and last and most importantly that vital match day
component – makeup. The fact that this was a cup final made my comeback
report all the more special. Over the years the Team have been involved in
many finals, such has been their success, but this was the Tesco’s U16
final; given the sponsor was Tesco I wondered if it was true that it was 2
cups for the price of one?
Another new experience was paying to get in, with a programme giving
player profiles, this was almost professional. This view was further
cemented when the teams marched out behind the ref and lined up before the
start of the match and filed past each other for pre-match handshakes. All
that was missing was the Band of the Grenadier Guards and Tom Jones to
sing the National Anthem; as a Welshman I would happily have obliged for
the latter.
Anyway the match. Some things in life are difficult to understand:
How is it that some people enjoy Marmite?
How is it that traffic is so slow on the A40?
We can now add to that – How is it possible that Carterton left the field
at halftime 1-0 down such had been the domination they had. The girls
virtually monopolised possession and were working the ball well. This was
one of the things that had not changed in my absence, they have always
been a great passing team. Much of the great stuff was coming down the
left side with Chloe Billings and Molly Parker combining well. Daughter of
the coach, Lydia Miles, had obviously listened to Dad at the breakfast
table and was making some surging runs into the box. A great move with her
and Nia Richards drew a great save from the Marston keeper. Lydia also had
a great opportunity to score, but a rising shot went just over the bar. It
was only a matter of time before the first goal came. And come it did
after 23 mins, only from Marston, a long ball from midfield put through
their number 17 (oh for the days when it was numbered 1 to 11), who
finished with aplomb. So one nil down, but we were playing well, we could
get this back. Carterton continued to press and had more corners than an
Octagon lovers convention, but Marston, particularly their number 2,
(between 1 and 11) defended well. Towards the end of the half, Marston
having been under the cosh for 40 mins, forced a couple of saves from our
keeper Marta Dyet, who did excellently given she had had so little to do.
Then it was half-time.
There was a slightly dodgy incident at half-time when Eddie Henshaw, Gary
Oakey and I went for a bacon roll. Somehow I was presented with a bacon
roll half the size of Eddie and Gary’s, what’s going on, I appealed to the
referee, but he was nowhere to be seen. Another football injustice that
the Match of the Day Team would have long debated.
The 2 teams came out for the second half, or rather one of them did. The
smooth passing, free flowing Carterton Team, seemed to have gone in to
their shells and were no longer dictating the game. Marston started to
grow with confidence and were pushing the Carterton girls back into their
own half. We still had chances though and Chloe Billings had an
opportunity after 11 mins, but the shot was just wide. Lydia Miles also
had another opportunity, but again the shot was just over the bar. Then on
30 mins the increasingly impressive Marston, broke through, and despite an
excellent challenge from Becci Hodgson, scored again for 2-nil. It was now
a tough ask, with less than 15 mins left. Both teams continued to play
some nice stuff, with chances from both sides. Becci made a goal saving
challenge and both Chloe and substitute Lucy Henshaw had late chances to
score, but neither could convert. With almost the final kick of the match
Marston made it 3-0, with a goal from a well taken corner (the Octagon
convention would have been delighted).
Beaten but unbowed, the girls can take pride from an excellent first half,
and for Manager Tim, it is for him to ensure they continue this
performance for the whole game. At the presentation I was intrigued to see
2 cups on the table, so it was 2 for the price of one in the Tesco cup,
some things never change I thought, but it turns out one was for man of
the match. As the presentation finished I set of to right the injustice of
Bacon-Rollgate, happily a spare sausage and chips, from Tesco’s of course,
saved the day.
19.02.11 Carterton FC 5 v
Crowmarsh 1
Yet another game where Carterton were continuously on the attack and the
defenders were solid the few times they were needed - indeed Gazza Eeles
even had a shot at goal this week! The first chance to score came to Chloe
Billins who was put through by a superb pass from Hayley Wrightson only
for the shot to go over the bar. Then came a series of 3 shots by Molly
Parker, each one being saved by the keeper. Finally, a great ball put
through by Lydia Miles saw Chloe calmly put it by the keeper. There was a
great period for about 20 minutes where Carterton played some lovely
passing football especially in midfield where Molly, Hayley, Megan Glyn
and Nia Richards really worked hard all game. Lydia had some good shots
saved and the first half ended after Chloe passed a fantastic ball across
goal to pick out Molly who slotted it in for a well deserved goal.
The 2nd half saw Bonita Penn out of defence and pushing forward creating
chances along with Lauren Major. Marta Dyet (after not much to do in the
1st half in goal), created many a chance with her marauding runs down the
wing. The defence of Gaz, Meagan Hill, Sarah Derrick and Bonita made sure
that Crowmarsh never really had a shot; they were so organised. Molly
opened the 2nd half scoring after some really good short passing between
6/7 players. A great across goal shot floated into the top left corner for
Megan (maybe helped by Molly!) and then another fine finish from Chloe
made the final score of 5 for Carterton. All the girls played very well
and again their work rate was excellent.
Always out to entertain, Lydia in goal gave us a comedy moment for the
Crowmarsh score – at the other end Ruby-Ann pulled off a series of
excellent saves to thwart the home side, and credit to her team mates for
sustained effort despite ever increasing pressure from the reds.
Megan was named Girl of the Game after yet another strong midfield
display. Well done everyone.
12.02.11 OFA County Cup Semi
Final
Carterton FC 4 v Wychwood 0
At last, a beautiful day to play and watch
football. Carterton fielded a near full squad of girls for this
important Oxfordshire FA county cup semi-final against Wychwood. The
first half saw some lovely passing football from the Carterton girls
with plenty of chances at goal by Chloe Billins and Molly Parker who
both put the ball just past the post and hit the crossbar. Chloe finally
managed to get on the score sheet with a well taken goal. All the girls
worked extremely hard in the first half and needed the 15 minute break.
A very strong 2nd half start by Carterton with Chloe again hitting the
post. Plenty of very good midfield play by Megan Glyn, Hayley Wrightson
and Nia Richards. Lydia Miles won a hard fought ball which she took
forward and slotted past the keeper. Bonita Penn battled all game and
made the Wychwood girls work hard against her, crossing some great balls
into the box and putting Becci Hodgson into a lot of space.
The defensive line were as strong as always not letting the opposition
anywhere near the Carterton goal. Sarah Derrick had a very good game and
showed some great initiative in bringing the ball forward.
Some great shots by Marta Dyet, Molly, Lucy Henshaw and Chloe forcing
the Wychwood goalkeeper to be their best player. A brilliant cross by
Marta enabled Nia to place a lovely ball past the keeper. Marta floated
a superb ball over the head of the keeper to put the final score at 4-0.
Credit to Wychwood for battling till the end as their goal came under
increasing pressure.
This was a very solid performance by all
the reds, with outstanding work rate throughout the team. There were
stand out performances from Bonita and Molly, with Sarah Derrick being
awarded Girl of the Game for excellent positional and link play.
We will play Marston Saints Angels in the Final in early March
Goals from Chloe Billins, Nia Richards, Marta Dyet and Lydia Miles secured
a place in the final for the home side.
League Cup Q/F 05.02.11
Carterton FC 1 v Tower Hill Vixens 0
The first half saw Carterton play against a very strong wind and
defending admirably against horrible conditions. Tower Hill managed to hit
the post but the game saw half time end at 0-0. Marta Dyet played in goal
for the first half and Sarah Coles kindly took the gloves for the 2nd
half.
The 2nd half started with 2 shots by Marta forcing the Tower Hill
goalkeeper to pull off some good saves. Megan Glyn also managed a shot on
target before being brought down just outside the 18yd box. Marta scored a
fabulous goal from the freekick. Lauren Major had a strong game on the
right wing and Chloe Billins had some fine shots. Solid play by all the
girls resulting in a 1-0 win to take them through to the semi-finals. A
hard fought game under extremely unkind conditions.
Girl of the Game was awarded to Ellie Norton for a personal best
performance this season.
15.01.11
Tower Hill Vixens 1 v Carterton FC 1.
Carterton
and Tower Hill U16s have met twice already this season with a score line
of 7-2 and 4-1 in Carterton’s favour, so the visitors today to Tower
Hill’s home ground might have presumed that this encounter was going to be
a walk in the park. Not so!
As well
as two skilled and determined teams doing battle today there was a third
adversary to contend with… a gale-force wind. After a wind-swept 80
minutes the final whistle ended the match with one goal to Tower Hill and
one goal to Carterton and several goals to the wind. Within the first
fifteen minutes Carterton should have been three goals up, with two
tremendous strikes from Lydia Miles and one from Nia Richards, which on a
calm day would have shot straight into the net, but today were swerved by
the wind to ping the post. Five minutes later an artful lob by Molly
Parker was also denied it’s rightful place. Chloe Billins was equally
robbed, at least twice, as was the industrious Bonita Penn with her
unintended bender. Return to sender.
On a calm
day this might easily have been Carterton’s best game of the season. Megan
Glyn was in great form, displaying her usual mid-field skill and
work-rate, keeping the team in perfect balance from her central position.
In their defence, captain Jade Pitts, Meagan Hill, Gaz Eeles, Ellie
Norton, the two Sarah's, Derrick and Cole and Marta in goal were
impenetrable against the wind and stopped all of Tower Hill’s impressive
attacks… and Becci Hodgson was a Ferrari in her previous life doing nought
to sixty in a split second down the left wing. Lucy Henshaw, Carterton’s
secret weapon, came on halfway through the first half but even she could
not get the better of the gale-force wind. Lauren Major came close on
several occasions.
Much
credit to Tower Hill! They gave as much as they got showing great spirit
and character throughout, far from defeatable thrice, they came to the
game determined to prove their true grit. They played great football and
they played as a team, as good as any in the league, but they were up
against the wind behind them, strong enough to turn the slightest touch of
the ball into a powerful kick at the whim of the wind over the crossbar
and into the willows behind the Carterton goal.
Half time
score: Tower Hill 0 – Carterton 0 … the wind, at least seven.
The
second half was a game of two quarters. Some great football was played by
both teams but it was all totally negated by the gale force that for some
reason had decided it would try its luck as a hurricane for all of the
second half. The sky was filled with flying hats. Hairstyles on the field
of play were totally ruined. Suddenly, somehow, Chloe scored and that was
a breath of fresh air for Carterton. This came as a blow to Tower Hill who
stepped up their game, but in vain against the hurricane. Carterton didn’t
dare to shoot for another goal for fear of having to retrieve the ball
from as far afield as Tim Bucktoo.
For the
final quarter of the game it was silently agreed to paint an invisible
white line the length of the pitch five metres from the far touch line, to
provide a long thin strip of grass on which to play a game of ping pong.
Thirty four times the ball went out of touch, nearly one every minute,
which provided both teams with some very useful throw-in practice. Then in
the final eight seconds Tower Hill’s Stephanie Bent went and spoiled it by
breaking free of the thin white line against the run of play and scoring
an equaliser. You should have seen the Tower Hill supporters jumping up
and down for joy. You would think they’d never scored a goal all season!
Then the referee blew the final whistle. Hey, what about the three minutes
of added time because of Tower Hill’s Charlie Hamilton faking being
knocked unconscious halfway through the second half? In those three
minutes Carterton could easily have scored another goal and won the match,
no problem, but what great sports they were shaking the hands of the
opposition… and three cheers for Tower Hill!
Final
score: Tower Hill one – Carterton won.
13.11.10
Carterton FC 2 v Radley 1
Pressures of
time bring a different style of report today! A slightly late kick off and
both teams settled quickly. Action at both ends brought two goals in the
first 6 minutes. First up was Radley with a low shot from Steph Carrick,
followed a minute later by Carterton’s Megan Glyn driving the ball through
from outside the box. The winning goal came in the 11th minute
of the second half when Marta Dyet’s high ball sailed into the top of the
net. A competitive game played in good spirits. Certainly all of the girls
played well today but I would like to make special mention of a few. Gaz
played a confident game in defence and Jade put in a captain’s
performance, winning the ‘Girl of the Game’ award. Hayley was excellent in
midfield, playing a crucial role and Chloe and Nia put in high energy and
determined performances. Sarah D must be complimented on her focussed play
and it was great to see Megan on the score sheet.
A great win
against quality competition; excellent attitude and commitment throughout
the match from all of the girls. Well done, everyone!
06.11.10 Oxford City 4 Carterton FC 2
In goal today was Katie Light, with Meagan Hill, Sarah Derrick, Jade Pitts,
Gayna Eeles and Becci Hodgson defending. In midfield were Nia Richards,
Hayley Wrightson, Megan Glyn, Ellie Norton, Bonita Penn and Chloe Billins,
with Lydia Miles, Lauren Major and Molly Parker up front.
Starting the match in a different formation, Carterton kicked off and Jade
put a good ball through for Bonita to pass to Molly, to win an early corner
for Carterton. A counter attack from Oxford City saw their first attempt on
goal go just wide. Nia pinched the ball from the toe of an Oxford player and
Molly was fast on the left wing but the Oxford girls were displaying some
great close control in midfield and they won back the ball. A lovely ball
from Meagan to Hayley was laid on for Molly but there was no-one supporting,
so back to City and a shot was saved by Katie. Moments later, spectators
thought a penalty had been awarded to City but it was an indirect free kick
following a pass back to the keeper. Filling the goal mouth with red shirts,
Carterton faced the ball from about 10 yards. The City player blasted the
shot but it was blocked by Jade and rebounded to safety. Back on the attack,
Nia chased a long ball, managing to knock it into the box but sadly, there
was no-one there. What a great opening 10 minutes - the battle was on!
Another good save from Katie, then Megan put Nia through but unfortunately,
she was narrowly off-side. More pressure from City in the Carterton half and
then Carterton were awarded a free kick. Chloe stepped up and hit a cracking
shot into the top corner of the net. Oxford City 0 Carterton FC 1. City
applied pressure immediately; Nia made a good clearance and then Jade
volleyed the ball up the pitch. A City corner hit the post and there was a
scramble to get the ball away. Carterton held firm as Oxford City pressed
for an equaliser. With 5 minutes of the half remaining, Carterton started to
get back into the game, with Becci playing calmly under pressure and great
defending from Meagan. A super pass and a run saw Lydia one on one with the
keeper – the keeper slipped ... but the ball bobbled out of play. At the
other end of the pitch, Chloe skilfully captured a City corner, played the
ball out of defence and sent Lauren sprinting up the middle – the whistle
blew for half time.
Oxford City 0 Carterton FC 1.
Carterton reverted to their usual formation and Oxford came out fighting.
Some well worked defending from Becci won Carterton a goal kick but City
continued to press forward. From the edge of the box, a shot came high over
the players – Katie jumped, got her fingers to it but the ball hit the top
of the net. 1 – 1. Carterton restarted the game and despite some brilliant
defending by Nia, Oxford won a corner from which they scored their second
goal. Oxford City 2 Carterton FC 1. City continued to apply pressure and the
Carterton girls were soaking it up – superb work by Gaz, a shot blocked by
Bonita, a timely tackle by Sarah, everyone playing a part but City broke
through again to take the score to 3 – 1. Certainly not downhearted, the
Carterton girls raised their game. An accurate pass from Ellie and Bonita
raced down the pitch, leaving City girls in her wake but her shot went just
wide. A corner to Carterton ... taken by Chloe ... and headed in by Jade!
Brilliant, 3 – 2! Carterton gained some momentum now and Chloe made an
amazing run but her shot was saved by the keeper. Then suddenly, from the
edge of the Carterton box, a shot came low and wide and Oxford scored their
fourth. Another period of pressure from City followed and the Carterton
girls resisted. A corner for City, a great reflex save, the ball bouncing
around in front of goal, then out for a goal kick and so the game finished,
Oxford City 4 Carterton FC 2.
A disappointing result for Carterton but the girls must be commended on
their effort and good spirit. They did not give up and they did not lose
heart; they continued to play to the last whistle. There was some good
football; some good skills on display, some excellent defending but
certainly, their usual passing game did not come together today. ‘Girl of
the Game’ will be awarded on Monday at training.
16.10.10 Carterton FC 7 v Tower Hill
Vixens 2
We always look forward to playing local rivals Tower Hill and today was no
exception. We had been allocated the main pitch at Kilkenny Lane, the sun
was shining as Tower Hill kicked off and both teams settled into their game.
This week Marta Dyet and Sarah Coles shared goal keeping duties, supported
by Meagan Hill, Gayna Eeles, Jade Pitts, Becci Hodgson and Sarah Derrick in
defence. Nia Richards, Hayley Wrightson, Bonita Penn, Lucy Henshaw and Chloe
Billins played in midfield, with Lydia Miles, Ellie Norton, Lauren Major,
Molly Parker and Marta Dyet (when not in goal) playing wide and up front.
Tower Hill kicked off but Carterton quickly took possession. Hayley’s first
touch was controlled and measured and Nia showed good pace and commitment on
the right wing. A lovely turn and cross by Chloe was held up well in
midfield by Molly, before a pass to Hayley took Carterton forward. Some
early pressure from Tower Hill gave them the first corner of the game but
this was dealt with efficiently by Gaz and Becci. Carterton were awarded a
free kick, well taken by Jade and picked up by Hayley. Some great battling
from Bonita won Carterton a throw. The home side were on the attack now; the
Tower Hill keeper came out but Molly made no mistake in hitting the back of
the net. Carterton FC 1 Tower Hill 0. Tower Hill responded almost
immediately with a shot on target comfortably caught by Marta. Meagan had
the ball now, making a great pass down the line to Lauren, who put the Tower
Hill defence under pressure. Lucy put a great ball through but then a
counter attack found the ball again in the Carterton area – a timely tackle
from Becci, a block by Jade and then Meagan coolly played the ball out of
danger. Back up the other end, Bonita’s cross was slotted home by Lauren to
double Carterton’s lead. Again Tower Hill responded with an attack, Marta
came out of her area to clear the ball, which was deflected forward. Tower
Hill got a foot to it and the ball headed for goal but Marta raced back
managing to pick it up! Lydia was on the pitch now, battling for the ball
and making a great pass. Chloe’s cross was headed on slightly by Jade - the
keeper couldn’t hold the ball and it fell to Lydia to score Carterton’s
third. Meagan was showing real speed and tenacity and Hayley was hassling
for the ball, which found its way to Chloe, who drove the ball home from the
edge of the area. Carterton FC 4 Tower Hill 0. Straight back into the game
and Sarah D blocked a Tower hill shot; another shot bounced off the post and
Tower Hill were trying to get back into the game. A free kick awarded to
Tower Hill was dealt with superbly by Meagan and soon after the whistle blew
for half time.
Carterton FC 4 Tower Hill Vixens 0
The Tower Hill girls came out fighting in the second half and managed to
pull 2 goals back in the first 10 minutes. Carterton FC 4 Tower Hill 2.
Carterton struck back immediately with a great goal from Chloe, sadly ruled
off-side. Minutes later, some super skill from Marta in the Tower Hill area
saw her shot get tangled in the feet of the keeper and the ball bobbled into
the goal for Carterton to increase their lead again. Hayley and Chloe were
working well together in midfield and then Chloe’s magnificent shot soared
into the top of the net. A wonderfully timed ball from Lydia to Chloe
brought up Chloe’s hat-trick, as she took the ball on to score. Carterton FC
7 Tower Hill 2. During this period, the Tower Hill girls kept their heads up
and were always looking for opportunities. Sarah C, in goal, was called upon
a number of times to collect the ball in her area; Sarah D put in an
excellent tackle right in front of goal - Carterton defended with real
confidence. A lovely one-two between Sarah D and Ellie set Carterton off up
the field, then over to Marta for a great run well defended by Tower Hill.
The game finished soon after.
Final score: Carterton FC 7 Tower Hill Vixens 2
Tim congratulated the girls on a good team performance. With a maximum match
squad of 16 girls today, there were a lot of substitutions. The girls must
be praised for getting involved in the game as soon as they hit the pitch
and coming off graciously when required. The atmosphere on the bench was
super, with all the girls fully supporting their team mates. ‘Girl of the
Game’ was awarded to Meagan for a tremendous performance, showing pace,
determination and increased confidence. Well done, Meagan and well done
everyone!
009.10.10 Highworth Town FC 2 Carterton
FC 2
An undulating and sloping pitch accompanied by the wind did not bode well
for good football but nonetheless Carterton kicked off and the game got
underway. Katie Light was in goal and in defence were Jade Pitts, Gayna
Eeles, Becci Hodgson, Sarah Derrick, Sarah Coles and Meagan Hill. The
midfield players were Megan Glyn, Chloe Billins, Hayley Wrightson, Lucy
Henshaw and Ellie Norton and playing up front were Lydia Miles, Marta Dyet
and Lauren Major.
The game set off at a fast pace and neither team seemed to settle quickly
into their game. The ball spent a lot of time in the air and bounced
awkwardly but the Carterton girls made an effort to bring it down and play
football. Carterton were awarded a free kick, which Chloe struck well and on
target. The Highworth keeper couldn’t hold the ball but neither could Lucy
get her foot fully to it, so it went out for a goal kick. The goal kick was
wonderfully captured by Marta, whose shot went just wide. Highworth picked
up the mantle now and set off down the pitch only to be stopped in their
tracks by an excellent tackle from Chloe. A super one two between Chloe and
Lucy moved the ball onto Hayley, who passed accurately down the line to
Marta. Highworth battled to get the ball back and into the Carterton half. A
high bouncing ball was dealt with superbly by Meagan and Jade’s clearance
was picked up by Marta, setting Chloe up for another shot which went just
wide. Highworth won a corner. The ball came high and near to the bar; Katie
managed to get her fingers to it but the ball fell behind her and was
slotted home by Highworth to take them into the lead. This seemed to spur on
Highworth and a string of attacks and shots followed. Katie ran out
confidently to kick the ball away and minutes later she saved the ball at
the feet of the on-coming striker. Some great play in midfield by Lucy and
some lovely skill from Megan on the right took Carterton forward again, with
Ellie passing to Chloe, whose shot was blocked. With Lauren and Lydia
chasing every opportunity, Carterton were awarded a free kick but they could
not find the equaliser before the half time whistle.
Half time: Highworth Town FC 1 Carterton FC 0
At half time Tim talked about holding the ball, keeping possession and
gaining some composure. The girls did just that and in the opening few
minutes of the match had equalised with a brilliantly worked goal. A gradual
build up from midfield gave the ball to Marta, who had plenty of time to
cross to Chloe, for a beautifully struck ball into the back of the net. One
all and all to play for! Carterton enjoyed a period of pressure now. Meagan
put Marta through in a great position, thwarted by a timely tackle from the
Highworth defender. Another free kick for Carterton and a series of shots
from Marta and Chloe were saved, blocked or deflected. Again, Highworth were
back in the game with a shot going wide but then a stunning cross from Megan
to Marta was hit cleanly into the goal to give Carterton a 2 – 1 lead.
Highworth were now totally focussed on equalising and the remainder of the
game seemed to be spent in the Carterton half. The defence came into their
own now with some amazing work from Gaz, a tremendous work rate and terrific
determination. Jade, strong and commanding as always; Sarah D and Becci
reading the game well and getting in those important touches. Sarah C,
growing in confidence each game, cleared and blocked the ball and Katie
caught cleanly lobbed balls and driving shots. It seemed that Carterton
would be able to hold on to their lead but with only minutes to go, a
Highworth corner was headed onto the post and into the net.
Final score: Highworth Town FC 2 Carterton FC 2
Tim and the spectators noted Katie’s solid performance in goal and all the
girls were praised for their efforts in difficult playing conditions. They
all battled well and despite their frustrations, persevered and kept their
heads up. ‘Girl of the Game’ was awarded to Gaz for a super high energy
performance, showing skill and determination. Well done, Gaz and well done
everyone!
02.10.10 Kidlington Youth FC 0 v
Carterton FC 3.
With Katie Light in goal, Meagan Hill, Sarah Coles, Gayna Eeles, Jade Pitts
and Becci Hodgson provided Carterton’s defence. In midfield were Megan Glyn,
Hayley Wrightson, Chloe Billins, Bonita Penn and Ellie Norton; on the wings
and up front were Molly Parker, Marta Dyet, Nia Richards and Lydia Miles.
The early morning mist cleared and the sun came out, as Kidlington kicked
off. Carterton soon settled into their game, winning a corner and then a
throw-in from which Chloe’s shot was deflected wide. Lots of activity in the
first quarter of the match, as both teams tried to gain control. Gaz was
cool in defence, passing the ball accurately to Jade and Becci was
commanding down the wing. Meagan teamed up with Megan to clear a threatening
attack on the right and the ball was smoothly passed to Hayley in midfield.
Carterton kept pressing forward, threatening the Kidlington goal and
although Kidlington enjoyed some forays into Carterton’s half, Katie in goal
and the back four were not troubled too greatly. It was only a matter of
time before Carterton hit the back of the net and the goal came from a
strong run and super strike from Marta. Not surprisingly, the goal seemed to
wake up the Kidlington girls and the last ten minutes of the half, plus
injury time, saw them grabbing back some possession. Sarah, having just
arrived on the pitch, found herself in the midst of a Kidlington break but
the Carterton midfield and wings, with Chloe and Nia in excellent form, held
strong providing further goal scoring opportunities for the visitors.
However, the whistle blew and the first half finished – Kidlington Youth FC
0 Carterton FC 1.
Carterton were now playing downhill and within minutes, Lydia had made a
stunning run and hit a shot into the side netting. This was quickly followed
by an attempt on goal from Chloe, who lobbed the ball over the top of the
Kidlington defence, the ball hitting the post before rebounding for Lydia,
whose shot skimmed the top of the bar. Bonita and Becci’s partnership on the
left was creating chances and now Molly, Chloe and Ellie teamed up
fantastically to build up an attack. Molly showing superb skill in turning
and passing, getting the ball back and hitting a wonderful shot tipped onto
the bar by the keeper. The Kidlington girls were under tremendous pressure
from Carterton at this point but they kept their heads up looking for
opportunities to break through. Nia had the ball now on the right wing and
she stormed down the pitch skilfully avoiding the Kidlington players before
crossing to Chloe whose carefully placed shot beat the diving keeper.
Kidlington 0 Carterton 2. There followed a ten minute period of possession
from Carterton and then Kidlington finally found themselves in a scoring
position but the ball crossed the face of the goal and went out for a goal
kick. A great kick from Gaz, was collected by Megan and passed to Ellie for
a shot on target saved by the keeper. Kidlington again tried to get back
into the game but the Carterton defence soaked up any pressure. With the
match drawing to a close, Marta’s brilliant run and cross almost brought a
third goal but Lydia could not quite get there ... then Lydia made it past
her marker and she confidently drove the ball home. Kidlington Youth FC 0
Carterton FC 3.
Another superb team effort from the girls this week. Tremendous team spirit
and fantastic attitude from everyone. Special praise at the end of the match
for Molly in recognition of her amazing work rate. Nia also, celebrating her
birthday today, put in high energy performance and played some great
football. ‘Girl of the Game’ was awarded to Chloe for yet another determined
and focused performance, with some truly stunning skill and impressive
positional play. Well done Chloe and well done everyone!
25.09.10 Carterton F C 10 v Wychwood 0
With the usual goalkeeper unavailable, Marta Dyet, Sarah Coles and Gayna
Eeeles shared the goalkeeping duties, as well as playing out field and with
four other regular players also unavailable Jade Pitts, Becci Hodgson,
Meagan Hill, Bonita Penn, Chloe Billins, Hayley Wrightson, Megan Glyn, Ellie
Norton, Lauren Major and Molly Parker completed the squad.
Wychwood kicked off and both teams settled quickly into the game. A great
ball from Chloe provided an early opportunity for Molly - unfortunately, she
was ruled off-side. Some good control from Gaz in defence and a lovely first
touch from Lauren took Carterton forward and won them a corner, which was
taken by Chloe. Wychwood managed to clear the ball but Chloe crossed it in
again for Jade to slot it home. 1 – 0 to Carterton. Wychwood got straight
back into the game winning a corner; Jade got her head to it to clear the
area. A lovely run from Lauren and composure in front of the fast
approaching goalie saw the ball go just over the bar. Wychwood, keen to
equalise made a break but the shot was comfortably saved by Marta. Up at the
other end, Meg’s shot was cleared and then Ellie spotted an opportunity and
from long range, she drove a low shot straight into the corner of the net. 2
– 0 to Carterton. The home team were playing some super football, with heads
up and brilliant passing. Bonita sent a great ball down the line to Becci
for a quick one, two and then to Chloe for a successful strike on goal.
The first half finished soon after: Carterton F C 3 Wychwood 0.
Sarah now took up position in the Carterton goal and Carterton scored two
goals in quick succession in the opening 5 minutes. Calm defending from
Meagan set off a Carterton attack and the first goal came from a narrow
angle by Molly. The second from a superb run by Becci, who was knocked off
balance by the keeper but recovered well to continue and score. Carterton 5
Wychwood 0. With Wychwood down to ten players, Carterton took a player off
the pitch to even up the numbers. The visitors tried to get back into the
game but Carterton were in control. Hayley in midfield, again in top form
with great vision and confidence, played a great part in keeping the ball in
Wychwood’s half. A great strike from Ellie increased the score again. Jade’s
run, brilliant pass to Marta, crossed to Ellie gave Ellie her hat-trick and
then Ellie was there again in a goal mouth scramble to grab her fourth goal
and Carterton’s eighth. Credit here to the Wychwood girls, who did not give
up, they continued to try to get forward. However, Marta and Molly scored
one each and then Wychwood were down to 9 players. Carterton matched this
and the last ten minutes or so, were played as 9 a-side.
Final score: Carterton FC 10 Wychwood 0
Lots of praise for all the team and a special mention for Ellie and her four
goals. ‘Girl of the Game’ was awarded to Becci in recognition of yet another
super performance, excellent positional play and a truly brilliant goal to
top it off. Well done, Becci and the team. Another great result!
18.09.10 Marston Saints Angels 2 v Carterton FC 3
The Carterton girls were Katie Light in goal, Jade Pitts, Meagan Hill, Gayna
Eeles, Becci Hodgson, Sarah Derrick and Sarah Coles in defence; Megan Glyn,
Hayley Wrightson, Lucy Henshaw and Chloe Billins in midfield; Marta Dyet,
Lydia Miles, Nia Richards and Lauren Major on the wings and up front and not
forgetting Molly Parker, who was playing her first league match for the
team.
Marston kicked off but it was Carterton who applied the early pressure in
the first quarter of the game with some lovely turns and passes by Chloe,
Hayley and Megan in midfield, pushing the ball forward for Marta and Lauren
to chase. A series of throws and a corner brought Marston into the game but
some determined defending from Becci on the wing and Jade in the middle took
care of any danger. Chloe picked up the ball now, took it forward and passed
to Marta, straight onto Molly, who struck the ball perfectly to hit the back
of the net. Marston Saints Angels 0 Carterton FC 1. Marston began to fight
back immediately hitting a long low shot - Katie dived to push it wide,
Meagan picked it up on the back line and played the ball calmly out of the
area. A great ball from Hayley into space put pressure on Marston as Lydia
raced to it and then Chloe, showing some wonderful skill got a shot on
target – saved. Just before half time, with Marston keen to equalise, they
broke and struck a long shot ... into Katie’s safe hands.
Half time: Marston Saints Angels 0 v Carterton FC 1
Marston came out very strongly in the second half, with a number of their
shots on target. The Carterton defence were under pressure and a well struck
ball found its way through the crowd and into the net. One all. Quickly back
into the game, Hayley, who was playing fantastic football in midfield,
showed some lovely skill in setting up Chloe for a strong shot, forcing a
good save from the Marston keeper. A throw in into the box from Marston, was
struck firmly into the Carterton net. 2 – 1 and Carterton needed to regain
some composure, as Marston continued to play attacking football. Katie
rolled the ball out now to Jade, who played it onto Hayley, then across to
Nia, back into Molly who struck a fine ball to bring the equaliser Carterton
were looking for. Marston Saints Angels 2 Carterton FC 2. Both teams were
determined to be the winner and play continued to be fast and furious, with
the spectators holding their breath, gasping and applauding! With only a few
minutes remaining, Nia, Lydia and Marta threatened the goal in a super
string of runs and passes and then it was Hayley’s accurate pass to Chloe,
followed by Lydia’s long shot, which allowed Carterton to claim the winning
goal. Marston Saints Angels 2 Carterton FC 3
Special praise was given to Katie for a great performance in goal and Tim
thanked the girls, who were not feeling very well today for the effort they
put into their performances. ‘Girl of the Game’ was awarded to Hayley in
recognition of yet another super display of football – great positional
play, wonderful turns and tackles and a range of superb passes. Well done
Hayley and well done everyone. A particularly challenging match today,
played at pace. 11.09.10 Crowmarsh 0 v Carterton FC 1
Regular Carterton players Katie Light, Gayna Eeles, Jade Pitts, Meagan Hill,
Becci Hodgson, Sarah Derrick, Lydia Miles, Hayley Wrightson, Lucy Henshaw,
Megan Glyn, Lauren Major and Marta Dyet were pleased to see the return of
Chloe Billins after a couple of seasons away and they welcomed new signings
Sarah Coles and Ellie Norton to the team’s first league match of the season.
The first half saw the Carterton girls play a lovely passing game, knocking
the ball around well and creating chances. Winning the ball in midfield,
Megan sent a wonderful ball forward for Lauren to run onto, pass to Chloe
and a great shot forced an equally great save from the Crowmarsh keeper.
Indeed Carterton had many opportunities to score with shots from Chloe,
Marta and Hayley saved, Lauren hitting the side netting and Lucy hitting the
post. Crowmarsh worked hard to create their own chances leading to a break,
a shot and a diving save from Katie. All other attempts from Crowmarsh to
get through the Carterton defence were thwarted by Gaz, Jade, Meagan, Becci
, Sarah D and Sarah C (not all on the pitch at the same time, of course!).
The first half finished 0 – 0.
Carterton began the second half where they had finished the first, building
up their attacks with good passing football and patience. Crowmarsh were
pushing all the way and making the Carterton girls work hard. Chloe and
Marta put in shots that went just wide; Lydia passed to Chloe whose shot was
saved, then Lydia chipped the keeper but the ball just went over the bar.
Crowmarsh now broke free. With the Crowmarsh player 2 metres ahead of her
and in full flight, Becci turned and stormed down the pitch to successfully
retrieve the ball and send it back into the Crowmarsh half. Continued
pressure from Carterton had to bring a goal and it did. Marta to Chloe to
Lydia and a goal ... but the whistle blew –off side! Carterton were
disappointed but not disheartened. In midfield Hayley, Megan and Ellie
battled hard and again, Megan put through a brilliant ball to Marta, forcing
yet another great save from the Crowmarsh keeper. With perhaps five minutes
to go, new signing Sarah C sent a long ball to Marta, who made no mistake in
hitting the back of the net 1 – 0 to Carterton. Both teams played right up
to the final whistle – Carterton looking for a second and Crowmarsh looking
for the equaliser. What a great opening match to the season.
With Tim struggling to name a ‘Girl of the Game’ due to an excellent team
effort, the girls decided to make the award to Marta. Well done, Marta and
well played everyone! |
