Women’s FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round…..CFC 2 v 1  Stoke Athletic

match report by Kirsty.....Carterton Ladies continued their progress in this years Women’s FA Cup with a positive result against Stoke Lane ladies from Bristol winning 2-1 The start of the game saw Carterton on the back foot once again and it took them a while to get into any rhythm. Stoke started much the brighter of the 2 teams and their wing play seemed to cause Carterton a number of problems in the early stages. As the first half went on the Stoke side became more and more of a threat and created a number of chances on the Carterton goal. Resolute defending from the Carterton back four in particular, Lorraine Kutcha and Kirsten Fagg restricted the Stoke forwards to long range efforts. When they did get in close Clare Crossman kept them at bay in the Carterton goal. After 30 minutes the Stoke pressure finally paid off when a speculative shot from one of the Stoke forwards saw Kirsten Fagg attempt to block the shot in the Carterton area however, in attempting to stop the ball from hitting her face the ball struck her arm and the referee awarded a penalty. The kick was expertly executed in off the post giving Stoke the advantage. Continued pressure from Stoke and more solid defending from Carterton left the score in Stokes favour at the break. The second half saw a revitalised Carterton team take to the field and they were unlucky not to equalise straight from the kick off. This was to set the scene for the half and it was the turn of the Stoke side to find themselves on the back foot. Excellent defending on their part now kept Carterton at arms length. Ann Harvey became more and more prominent in the centre of the Carterton midfield and with an outstanding performance from Tracy McCue beside her their efforts began having a positive effect on the game. The continued pressure on the Stoke goal saw shots hitting the post and the bar but still not breaching the keeper in the Stoke goal. With 15 minutes to go a number of tactical switches were made to the Carterton formation and the impact was instantaneous. A well worked wide ball saw Lauren Spragg fire an effort in from the angle which completely deceived the Stoke keeper to level the scores. Stoke kept giving them reminders to think defensively and a number of breakaway attacks on the Carterton goal gave some cause for concern. The Carterton players stuck to their task which created a fitting finale to an excellent game. With 2 minutes remaining the ball fell to the impressive Ann Harvey in the Carterton midfield and her shot from the edge of the area was struck like an arrow towards the Stoke goal where it hit the inside of the upright and landed into the back of the net to put Carterton ahead. To their credit the Stoke players kept their heads up and pressed for an equaliser however, time was not on their side and the final whistle confirmed Cartertons progress into the next round of the cup.

9.9.07

CFC3 v 1v Banbury Utd

match report by Kirsty…..The start of the league season saw Carterton ladies entertain the visit of Banbury United. Owing to a few problems with the set up of the pitch, Carterton’s pre match preparations were hindered and they had very little time for a warm up prior to kick off. Banbury took full advantage of this and were by far the better side in the first half. They were quicker to the ball and gave the Carterton players very little time on the ball when they had it. Carterton were struggling to get into the game and despite very few changes from their FA cup exploits of the previous week, they gave a lacklustre display in the first half.Banbury kept up the pressure on the Carterton goal throughout the first half and rightly deserved their lead after 30 minutes with a well placed shot into the far corner of the Carterton net. The second half saw a couple of tactical switches by Carterton and the team took to the field with a bit more resolve. From the kick off it was evident that the half time had galvanised the Carterton players and they were unlucky not to level the scores from the restart. Carterton stayed with their game plan in the second half and chance after chance started to appear. A fine performance from the Banbury keeper kept the Carterton attacks at bay until the 65th minute when Vicky Strode slotted the ball into the Banbury net after the ball broke to her in the penalty area. Carterton kept up the pressure as the Banbury players began to tire and in the 85th minute Verity Newell once again broke free of the Banbury defence and fired a shot over the keeper which came back off the post and deflected into the net. Banbury did not let their heads drop and tried to come back at Carterton however, a clearance from one of their rare second half attacks saw Newell once again break free and round the Banbury keeper to make it 3-1 to Carterton.

2.9.07

Women’s FA cup Preliminary round…..CFC (5) v (0)v Aylesbury Utd

match report by Kirsty:-This eagerly awaited fixture was a repeat of the FA Cup prelim round from last year which went in Aylesbury’s favour 1-0. Carterton started much the brighter of the 2 sides and despite kicking in to the breeze were in comfortable control of the game in the early stages with Ann Harvey at the centre of everything that the Carterton team created.

Aylesbury settled into the game and worked the ball forward very well but appeared to be lacking in the final third of the pitch. Carterton began making things more challenging for the Aylesbury defence with Verity Newell in particular causing them problems. On 22 minutes another ball threaded through from midfield saw Newell slot the ball home to put Carterton into a well deserved lead.
Carterton maintained the pressure and just before half time Newell found herself in space inside the Aylesbury penalty box and executed a delicate chip over the keeper to double Cartertons'  lead.
The game saw Carterton deploy their wide players in very advanced positions in the second half which always gave them options when the ball had been won in the midfield. The width stretched Aylesbury to the limit and raids down both wings were proving successful. Lauren Spragg in particular was able to enjoy a lot of time on the ball to feed the forward players. Early pressure in the half saw Carterton win a corner. The ball was subsequently played back to the taker, Ann Harvey who struck the ball into the far corner of the net from the tightest of angles. A corner some moments later saw Harvey deliver a pinpoint cross into the Aylesbury area which was despatched superbly into the net by Vicky Strode increasing Carterton’s lead to 4.<br> Verity Newell completed her hatrick shortly before the end after an excellent interchange of passes through the midfield saw her finish in style. To their credit the Aylesbury players maintained their effort and were unlucky not to nick a consolation goal in the latter stages of the game.
However, the team performance of the Carterton squad was always going to make the match difficult for whoever the visitors were and this was reflected in the final 5-0 result in their favour.
Carterton will now play hosts to Stoke ladies on the 16th September at Kilkenny lane with a 2pm kick off in the first round of the Women’s FA Cup.
