4.5.09 SBJ Insurance Brokers Challenge Cup Final Carterton FC    0    -    1    Almondsbury

Almonds players trained last night in preparation for Monday's SBJ Insurance Brokers League Challenge Cup Final against Carterton at Shrivenham FC.
Almonds will be without suspended pair John Lock and Paul Fowler and also Marcus Mapstone who has been ruled out for 6 weeks with a Hamstring injury sustained in the final league game against Reading on Saturday.
This represents the Almonds last chance of silverware for this season after finishing 4th, 6 points behind winners Hungerford Town who celebrated promotion to the British Gas Business Southern League Division One South & West, after a 1-1 draw with Hook Norton.

Almondsbury started much the stronger, playing with the wind  and down the slope, they kept Carterton penned into their own half, but though they pressed, Carterton's two centre halves, Tom Perry and Gary Smales stood resolute and managed to restrict Almondsbury to long range efforts.  It wasn't until the midway through the first half that Carterton were to have their first chance, which came to nothing.  James Domm was twice called upon to make crucial saves to keep Carterton in the game after good work down the right.  Then after having an earlier strong penalty appeal turned down, Almondsbury were gifted the chance to take the lead from the spot when Tom Perry was adjudged to have pushed Kris Davis, Kane Ingram stepped up and drilled his penalty passed James Domm in the Carterton goal to give Almondsbury the lead on 31 minutes.  Carterton continued to defend in numbers and only managed to break out occasionally, but never troubling the Almonds defence.  Then as half time approached a mix up in the Carterton defence, saw James Domm up end Richard Kear, to give Almonds a chance to double their lead, but this time James Domm stood firm and managed to kick away Kane Ingrams spot kick, to keep Carterton in the game.  The second half was a different story, with Chris Bowles starting to win a lot of ball in midfield, Carterton were able to start creating chances, though Almondsbury maintained the lions share of possession, it was Carterton who were creating the better chances.  First of all Mark Threlfall found Michael Duerden with an inch perfect through ball, but his header was inches to high, then Danny King saw a header go wide, from a Jamie Stalker free kick, but for all their effort they couldn't find a break through, then in the final minute, they thought they had it, when Pete Hutt flicked on a long throw, Michael Duerden saw his scrambled effort drift just wide. To leave Carterton falling just short.

18.4.09 SBJ Insurance Brokers Challenge Cup - Semi Final Carterton FC 2 (D King, M Duerden) v Shortwood 1

Carterton entertained title chasing Shortwood in the semi final of the Challenge Cup at Kilkenny Lane on Saturday. On the back of two straight wins Carterton were out of blocks early and put Shortwood under plenty of pressure, giving them no time to settle. Though it was Shortwood who created the early chances, but James Domm in the Carterton goal was in good form and denied them an opening early goal to settle them down. But it was Carterton who broke the deadlock Michael Duerden broke free down the left and put in a deep cross that Denis King met and powered his header into the corner of the net. Carterton defended their lead superbly, denying Shortwood any space and only the odd long shot, but with only minutes to go to the break, Carterton failed to clear a corner and Michael Green popped up at the far post to equalise in off the bar, to send the teams in at the break level at one apiece. Playing down the slope in the second half Carterton were much the better team and should've taken the lead when Danny King was put through with only the keeper to beat, but his lob sailed wide. Carterton continued to press and finally took the lead through Michael Duerden, after he had missed an identical chance earlier, he made no mistake with this one, after cutting across the last defender, he placed his shot under the out rushing keeper. Shortwood rallied for the final 10 minutes, but with both Tom Perry and Gary Smales having excellent games at the heart of Carterton's defence, it was too little too late and it was the underdogs, Carterton who progressed to the final at Shrivenham in May.

28.3.09 Carterton 0 v 2 Hook Norton

After a scrappy start due to the windy conditions, Carterton soon gifted Hooky their opener, Jon Steedman's back pass was intercepted by Ricky Johnson, who calmly slotted his shot passed the stranded James Domm in the Carterton goal. With neither team getting to grip with the blustery conditions, the game stuttered along and it wasn't until the final 10 minutes that Hooky and Johnson scored their second to make the game safe.

21.3.09 Carterton 5 (goals H: C.Bowles M.Duerden J.Fletcher D.King T.Perry) v 2 Pegasus Juniors (Goals A: C.Mortlock(2))

Carterton finally got back to winning ways with a comfortable win against visitors Pegasus. Playing down the slope and with the wind in the first half, they dominated the opening exchanges, with both Tom Fletcher and Tom Perry going close, before Chris Bowles opened the scoring with a far post header from a Mark Threlfall corner. On the stroke of half time Danny King made it two, when he arrived late to steer home a Mark Threlfall cross. Pegasus pulled one back at the start of the second half with a superb strike from Chris Mortlock, but that just was as close as they got to leveling the game. As Carterton scored 3 goals in 7 minutes, with Tom Fletcher, Tom Perry and Michael Duerden all getting on the score sheet. Chris Mortlock scored a consolation goal for Pegasus to make the final score 5 - 2. match report by Rob King

Carterton’s unenviable sequence of 12 games without a win ended with a 5-2 mauling of Pegasus Juniors.  On target for Carterton were Chris Bowles, Dennis King, Tom Perry, Tom Fletcher and Michael Duerden.  Chris Mortlock netted both Peggy goals. report taken from Hellenic Boot Room chatter

Table toppers Hungerford Town entertained Carterton and duly won by 5-1. Pete Macklin opened the scoring for Hungerford with Ricky King equalizing for Carterton. Graham Edney put Hungerford back into the lead just before the half time whistle. Second half goals by Richie Saunders, Graham Edney again and Jamie Gosling secured the win for Hungerford. report from Hellenic League "boot room chatter"

Carterton travelled to top of the table Hungerford with a depleted squad due to injuries to Jamie Stalker, Gary Smales and Michael Duerden. But still gave a good account of themselves for the first hour. Playing up the slope in the first half, they struggles to contain Hungerford's flowing football and they deservedly took the lead after 15 minutes when Pete Macklin headed home from a corner. But for the rest of the half Carterton matched Hungerford all over the park and deservedly drew level, when James Fleming fed Ricky King who coolly slotted home from close range, they could've then taken the lead when Hungerford's keeper spilt the ball, but Ricky King failed to capitalise. As the half was drawing to a close, Carterton failed to clear the ball and from the resulting right wing cross Graham Edney found the net after James Domm had parried his first shot. It wasn't until the 70 minute that Hungerford made the game safe, with Graham Edney scoring his second after some good build up play. With Carterton tiring, Hungerford were able to score another two late goals, to run out 5 - 1 winners.

17.1.09 Carterton 2 (J Fleming 61, M Threlfall 80 Pen)  v 0 Abingdon Tn

On a windy afternoon, both teams struggled to come to terms with the conditions in the first half and apart from a couple of long range efforts, neither team managed to create a good goal scoring chance.  Though Carterton started the second half much the busier and started to dominate possession, Dave Rodgers went close on a couple of occasions, but it was James Fleming who opened the scoring on the hour, after Mark Threlfall and Danny Dixon combined well to set up Jamie Stalker, whose cross was put in by James Fleming.  Danny Dixon then had a long range effort cannon back off the upright, before Danny King failed to react quick enough at the near post, when a poor corner surprisingly reached him and his effort was scrambled off the line.  But with 10 minutes to go, Dave Rodgers was fouled in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, Mark Threlfall made no mistake to put the game beyond Abingdon's reach and secure all 3 points for Carterton.

20.12.08 Oxfordshire Senior Cup - Round 2 - Horspath 0 v 3 Carterton FC

Carterton played up the slope in the first half and dominated the early exchanges, they were soon 1 up, when a Jamie Stalker cross, flew in to the top corner, leaving the home keeper with no chance. Carterton continued to dominate and further chances fell to Tom Fletcher and David Bostock, but neither could find the back of the net. For all their dominance Carterton were being frustrated by their hardworking opponents and it wasn't until the hour mark that Carterton finally scored their second, a Mark Threlfall free kick found Danny King, who thundered in an unstoppable header. Horspath then created a couple of half chances, before Mark Threlfall put the game beyond them, with a neat finish, after being put through by James Fleming.

13.12.08 postponed till 10.2.08  Old Woodstock Town v Carterton FC

6.12.08 Highworth Town 1 v 0 Carterton FC

Carterton started off the brighter of the two teams, but it was Highworth who opened the scoring within 20 minutes, when a mix up with Danny Dixon and Jamie Butt, allowed Tom Dingle to run unchallenged from the half way line to beat James Domm in the Carterton goal. Carterton went close with both Mark Threfall and Danny King hitting the woodwork, but were unable to equalise before the break. In the second half, Highworth looked the better team and went close on several occasions to increasing their lead. Carterton, for all their effort, couldn't break down a resolute Highworth defence, to find an equaliser and ended up coming away with no points.

Webb hails Highworth response     12:20pm Monday 8th December 2008     By Anthony Marshall
HIGHWORTH Town boss Dave Webb got the perfect response from his players following their midweek mauling - a win and a clean sheet.
Webb could only watch on in disbelief as his side shipped six goals against local rivals Fairford Town on Tuesday night, but they bounced back on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Carterton in the Hellenic League Premier Division.
Tom Dingle’s 18th-minute goal - a fine individual effort - was all that separated the sides, but while Webb would have liked to see his side close the game out with further strikes, he was delighted to record a first clean sheet in league action since the middle of October.
Webb said: “It was a good win and obviously to get back to winning was very important.
“When you suffer a heavy defeat you look for a reaction and I knew they would react. The lads showed good character to come back from what happened in midweek - we had to up our game and the players did that.
“One of the most pleasing things was keeping a clean sheet, especially having just let in six goals.
“The boys’ defending was superb and with the quality we’ve got in there we need to keep more clean sheets.
“I’ve got so much belief in the players we’ve got at the club but we’ve got to start getting these sort of results week in, week out and improving our consistency.”
Elsewhere, Fairford Town suffered their first defeat in five games as they went down 1-0 away at Abingdon Town, with Jelroy Constant scoring the only goal of the game.
And Shrivenham were also on the losing side as they conceded twice inside the opening 15 minutes to get beaten 2-0 at home by Kidlington.

22.11.08 Carterton FC 4 (C Bowles 58, 78 C Williams 89, 90) v Marlow United 1 (D Pedley 33)

Playing up the slope in the first half Carterton dominated the opening exchanges, but were woeful in front of goal, with Tom Fletcher missing a couple of good opportunities, before, on the half hour Marlow had their first real chance, but James Domm did well to push the shot around the post, though he had no luck a few minutes later when Dan Pedley hit his shot across goal into the far corner, to give Marlow the lead, totally against the run of play. Though Carterton continued to press, they couldn't get themselves level before the break.
Though Carterton continued to dominate the possession in the second half it was Marlow who had the better chances and it was only thanks to James Domm in the Carterton goal, that Carterton remained in touch. But on the hour, Carterton managed to level the scores, when from a Jamie Stalker free kick, Chris Bowles headed home, ten minutes later, he got his and Carterton's second, when, once again from a Jamie Stalker free kick, he managed to bundle the ball over the line from close range. Carterton continued to press, but it wasn't until the final minutes, that they made the game safe, when substitute Carl Williams scored, firstly from a rebound off the keeper, then a half volley just inside the box, to make it 4-1 and secure all 3pts for Carterton.

message from the Referee:-

Just wanted to drop you line to thank you for your hospitality on Saturday. It was the best I have experienced so far this season, and hope that I get sent back to carterton later in the season.

8.11.08 Abingdon Town 0 v 1  Carterton FC (Tom Fletcher)

With some late withdrawals, Gary Brown had to reshuffle his back line, with Danny King replacing the injured Gary Smales and David Bostock returning for the absent Carl Williams. On a very heavy pitch, neither team were able to take control of the game. But it was Carterton, who looked the most likely to open the scoring, with both David Bostock and Michael Duerden going close, but neither troubling the keeper. At the other end James Domm was having a quiet day, with Carterton's defence looking solid, it wasn't until the closing minutes of the first half that Abingdon had their first real chance, but Domm was alert to keep the scores level.
Carterton, were much the stronger team in the second half, but Abingdon defended well and were restricting Carterton to only half chances, but on 67 minutes, Carterton's best move of the match, produced the winning goal, with Dave Rodgers and David Bostock combining well, before Bostock's far post cross found Tom Fletcher unmarked, to head home from close range. Carterton soaked up some pressure as the game reached its closing stages, but were able to hold on for all 3 points.

18.10.08 Carterton FC 2 (Duerden 2) v 3 Chalfont Wasps

Not a bad result, Carterton were 3-0 down after 46 mins.

Carterton entertained high flying Chalfont Wasps at Kilkenny Lane on Saturday, hoping to continue their winning ways. But they soon found themselves one down, when on 3 minutes James Tripp, ran unchallenged to the edge of the box and unleashed a superb left foot shot that flew into the corner of the net. Wasps continued to press and made full use of the wind at the backs, pinning Carterton into their half for long periods. Their pressure finally paid off, when once again, Carterton failed to clear the ball form their box and when the ball to fell to Paul Gilbert he fired his shot into an empty net. Carterton continued to defend in numbers and went in at half time only 2 down. With the wind in their favour, Carterton were hoping to apply the pressure from the start of the second half, but were immediately in trouble, after some poor defending Lee Thompson made it 3 - 0. Carterton finally got a foot hold in the game, when Wasps failed to clear a free kick and Jamie Butt's cross shot found Mike Duerden at the far to head home. Carterton were now in full control and were soon back in the game, with 20 minutes to go Mike Duerden outpaced the last defender and after a great first touch slide home his and Carterton's second. The final 20 minutes, were all about Wasps hanging on, Carterton were getting closer and closer, first of all a Tom Perry shot was dragged wide, then Carl Williams had two good efforts, the second beating the keeper, but rebounding off the bar. In the end Wasp's hung on and took all 3 points.

14.10.08 Bicester Town 0 v 4 Carterton FC  (Gary Smales 24, Carl Williams 26, Tom Fletcher 57, Jamie MacDonogh 79)

11.10.08 Pegasus Jnrs 2 v 3 Carterton FC  (Fletcher, Rodgers, King)

Carterton made the long journey to Pegasus Juniors on Saturday, looking at getting back to winning ways, after two disappointing results. From the first whistle, Carterton were the first to settle and dominated the opening exchanges and were rewarded with a goal on 6 minutes, when Tom Fletcher finished off a good move with a fine left foot volley. Though as the half wore on, Pegasus, gradually managed to get back into the game and after Carterton had failed to clear their lines, Harding found himself unmarked at the far post and made no mistake with his finish, to send the teams in at half time all square. Carterton once again started the half strongly, but it was Pegasus, who took the lead, when from a long ball, Laurie, was the first to react and place his shot beyond the advancing keeper. Carterton kept plugging away and were soon level when substitute, Dave Rodgers, scored a fine individual effort. Carterton continued to press and their pressure paid off, with 5 minutes remaining, after a superb jinking run by Sam Greenslade, his crossshot was met at the far post by Danny King, to fire home and claim all 3 points.

4.10.08 Carterton FC 3 (Duerden 16, Perry 37, Fleming 55)  v 3 Milton United (Keyes 52 & 73, Butler 60)

On a wet and windy Saturday afternoon, Carterton, playing with the wind, dominated the first half and after some early chances, finally broke the deadlock, when on 16 minutes, Michael Duerden outpaced the final Milton defender, to put Carterton in front. Further chances fell to James Mortimer-Jones, David Bostock and Michael Duerden, before Tom Perry doubled Carterton's lead, with a glancing header, after the keeper had missed the cross. After creating so many chances, Carterton must've been disappointed going into the break with only a two goal advantage, leaving Milton with a chance in the second half of getting something out of the game. Playing with the wind, Milton dominated the opening proceedings and though Carterton looked dangerous on the break, it was Milton who scored first, pulling one back on 52 minutes, when Carterton failed to clear a corner, Lee Keyes found the back of the net. But Carterton's two goal advantage was soon restored, when James Fleming, netted at the far post. Milton were back within one, when on 60 minutes, Butler beat James Domm, in the Carterton goal. Then, with 15 minutes left, Milton equalised, when from a right wing cross, Lee Keyes, stole in at the far post and made no mistake with his finish. Though there were still some half chances, neither team could muster up a winner and the game finished all square. match report by Rob King

30.9.08 Ardley United 2 v 0 Carterton FC

(James Domm made a superb penalty save to deny Ardley another goal)  Ardley increased their unbeaten league record to five games after a convincing win against a lacklustre Carterton.
The home side were quick out of the blocks, and it only took four minutes for Andrew Stidder to put the ball in the net, alas only to be adjudged offside. A repeat of this on the quarter of an hour signaled Ardley’s intent, this time it was Danny Bone who was caught offside. The Carterton defence was under a lot of pressure, and with 21 minutes on the clock a free kick was awarded just outside the visitor’s penalty area. Dead ball specialist Murray Nicholl stepped up and swerved the ball around the wall to open the home side’s account. Carterton made an early substitution bringing on Durdin for captain Jamie Stalker, but it Ardley who had the majority of play. Andrew Stidder found himself through on goal but had a touch too many allowing Domm in the Carterton goal to scoop up the ball. On the half hour a deep cross from Murray Nicholl found Adam Garner at the far post his header was adjudged to have hit a defenders hand and referee Rob Partlett had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Captain Danny Mason stepped up, but his stinging shot was well saved. This inspired encouragement in Carterton and they followed with a five minute spell of positive play before half time.
Half Time: 1 – 0
Ardley had the dream start to the second half, when Danny Clarke’s cross found Adam Garner who made no mistake. With a two goal advantage some superb football followed. Matty Gooderick threaded the ball through for Andrew Stidder who shinned his shot following a bobble. Carterton fought back and had another good spell 20 minutes into the half. A corner for the visitors winged its way through the Ardley six yard box but to the amazement of all, no one managed a touch and it went out of play. In an effort to change the game Carterton played their two subs, but this had little effect. Manager Kevin Brock also decided to change strikers putting Jason Castello on for Andrew Stidder, but he was unable to emulate his 4 goal tally from the previous game, and Ardley had to settle for a convincing 2-0 win to push the up the table into sixth place of the FTL Futbol Hellenic League Premier Division

27.9.08 The SBJ - Insurance Brokers Challenge Cup - Preliminary Round

Carterton FC 2 (James Mortimer-Jones 47, Danny Dixon 60 (Pen) v Newbury FC 1 (Shaun Thorpe 67)

Another good performance and no cautions.  After a scrappy first half with no real clear cut chances, the second half started with Carterton dominating possession and almost immediately, Macdonagh, struck a shot against the bar, but it wasn't long before Carterton took the lead, when Mortimer-Jones, tapped in from close range after a good break down the left. It was soon 2 - 0, when on 60 minutes, the referee awarded a penalty after Fleming was bundled over in the box, Dixon made no mistake from the spot. From then on it was all Newbury, they pulled one back on 67 minutes, after a poor clearance from Stone was put back into the box and Thorp tapped in at the far post. They then had numerous chances to equalise, but couldn't quite find the finishing touch to some good approach play, and Carterton held on, to move into the next round.

20.9.08 FA Vase - 2nd Rd - Hayling United 1 v 0 Carterton FC

13.9.08 Hook Norton 1 v 2 Carterton FC    (David Bostock, Dave Rogers)

match report taken from FTL HEllenic league site:-  A lack lustre performance by a below par Hooky team, still missing through injury two or three players from their midfield engine, contributed to Carterton taking all 3 points in an evenly fought contest at The Bourne, the first match played there this season due to the cricket season extending to the first Saturday in September.
This first home match for Hooky also coincided with the opening of the new clubhouse, a marvellous addition for the North Oxfordshire club which is affiliated to the village’s Sports and Social Club.
The match itself got off to a spirited beginning and in the initial stages, the home team carried the play to the visitors but it was Carterton who went ahead when a ball crossed from the right was poorly defended by Hooky with the result that Dave Bostock had a simple tap- in at the far post after 8 minutes. Undeterred by this early set back, Hooky once more took the play to the visitors and were rewarded on 17 minutes when Ricky Johnson chased a through ball before shooting at the opposing ‘keepers legs. The ball rebounded to Joe Coleman on the right wing who returned the ball to Johnson and the Hooky leading scorer did not make a mistake on his second scoring opportunity, firing the ball past Domm into the left hand corner of the net for his tenth goal of the season so far. From this point onwards there was not a lot to choose between the two teams and it was somewhat of a surprise when Carterton regained the lead just before the break, following Hooky having a headed goal by captain Ian Trott disallowed for an infringement. On this occasion, the visitors won a corner on the right and the resultant set piece kick somehow eluded Matthew Dixon in the Hooky goal, falling to the feet of Dave Rodgers who volleyed the ball into the home net at the far post on 41 minutes.
Half Time: 1 – 2
With the slope in their favour, Hooky had the majority of possession in the second half without looking really dangerous in the last third of the pitch although they did strike the visitors’ bar on two occasions near to the end of the match. Undoubtedly, Carterton captain Jamie Stalker was greatly influential in helping his team to preserve their lead. For their own part, the visitors relied on sporadic attacks, playing neat and incisive football but, like their hosts, were unable to get the ball into the net on any further occasion.

9.9.08 Carterton FC v Fairford Town postponed as Fairford are playing in the FA Vase.

6.9.08 Carterton FC   2 v 4 Hungerford

Despite the bad weather the pitch at Carterton played well. Both sides played open attacking football but Hungerford Town looked the more dangerous from the outset. They swung the ball across the front line but were thwarted by determined Carterton tackling. The Carterton attack worked hard, but was unable to get a clear strike at goal in the first half. The only goal of the first half came in the 20th minute when a flowing Hungerford attack found Peter Macklin out on the left, his cross found the head of goal machine Ian Concannon who glanced a header accurately into the net. On the half hour Carterton had their only real chance in the half when a Jamie Stalker free kick was fumbled by Hungerford custodian Dominic Green but John Fletcher hit the rebound wide of the post. Both sides continued to look dangerous for the remainder of the half but were unable to convert their chances.                  Half Time: 0 – 1
The second period opened with a goal after five minutes when a corner by Hungerford found Tom Fila who hammered the ball into the net from twenty yards to give the visitors a two goal lead. Five minutes later a Carterton corner went to Tom Fletcher at the far post and he headed in to pull a goal back. Eight minutes later it was all square when Dominic Green gave a free kick away for holding the ball too long. The free kick went to Danny King who netted for 2-2. Hungerford regained the lead in the 71st minute when Macklin headed a corner on to Concannon who headed home. Four minutes later Hungerford made it four when Macklin was upended as he went into the penalty area. Concannon converted the penalty for his hat trick. Hungerford defended well for the last fifteen minutes and this time held the lead to the end of the game.

3.9.08 Wantage 3 (Keen) v 3 Carterton FC   (Fleming, Blakely, Bostock)

message to CFC:-  John & Gary, Just a note to thank you both for your assistance, cooperation & patience whilst the serious injury sustained by Sam Collier was dealt with last night.  the attitude of CFC players, management & supporters was exemplary & was greatly appreciated.  Sam was discharged early this morning with a dislocated knee joint, a reoccurrence of a former injury from a couple of years ago, and now faces a protracted period of recuperation, a process with which he is sadly all too familiar.  Once again, many thanks.   Best Wishes, Tony Woodward, Chairman Wantage Town FC

16.8.08 EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND  Carterton FC   2 v 1 Newport (IOW)

Newport made a tame exit from this years FA Cup, beaten by Hellenic League Carterton Town. Newport started the stronger of the two teams and took the lead in the 6th minute when a sweeping move saw Charlie Smeeton get around the back of the Carterton defence and hammer an unstoppable shot past the home keeper. It looked as though the Port would go on and add to this total as Carterton struggled to deal with the Port attack but several chances went begging in succession which the Port were to rue later on. The home attack didn't seem to be doing any better as their two or three efforts on goal missed by some margin. On 31 minutes they had a great chance to get back in the game when Harry Ovnik tripped a Carterton forward and a penalty was awarded. A great double stop from Jamie Bray, first the penalty then a follow up header from an encroaching striker preserved the Ports lead which they continued to hold until half time.
Half Time
Carterton 0 Newport 1
Obviously strong words had been said in both dressing rooms and both teams appeared more resolute in the opening exchanges of the second half. On 52 minutes Carterton had a great chance when their number 10, was blocked by another great save from Jamie Bray. Carterton were growing with confidence as they sensed that the Port had missed their opportunity to kill them off.
An injury to Tom McInnes on 66 mins meant a long delay and a substitution as Richard Sprooles came on for the injured striker. Almost immediately the ball moved to the other end of play and although looking suspiciously offside Martin Peace was left unmarked in the box to scoop the ball past Jamie Bray for the equaliser.
This stung the Port into action and Iain Seabrook set up Darren Powell with a great through ball but the Newport captain managed to put it over the bar. Still on the attack with just the keeper to beat Iain Seabrook was brought down from behind on the edge of the box. The referee only produced a yellow card for the offender much to the amusement of the Carterton team. From the free kick a cleverly worked move saw Charlie Smeeton put the ball over the bar.
On 77 minutes Newport fell for the sucker punch and not picked up on the near post Martin Peace glanced in a header to put the home side ahead.
Port were straight back on the attack and picking the ball up on the left Charlie Smeeton broke into the penalty area only to come down under a challenge from a defender. The shouts went up for a penalty but the referee booked the Port striker for diving.
The game was now getting heated as the referee struggled to maintain control and was handing out yellow cards to anyone who questioned a decision.
This effectively ended the game as the last three or four minutes descended into an ongoing argument.
A game that the Port should have won easily had escaped and many people at the final whistle were left shaking their heads including many Carterton supporters.

7.6.08  The Hellenic League held the Presentation evening for the 55th season of operation on Friday 6th June at the "Oxford Centre", Banbury Road, Oxford. Following an excellent meal League Chairman Bob Dalling welcomed our guests and congratulated member clubs on a successful season. Bob went on to advise that the sponsorship of Sport Italia ended early this week when General Manager Brian King was advised that the present sponsor would be unable to fulfil it’s obligation to the Hellenic League in season 2008-2009. There were a couple of times on Monday & Tuesday when the General Manager had to warn himself over the League stance on the use of ‘Inappropriate Language’. Tuesday morning a hastily arranged meeting was held with an Abingdon based company and by 5pm on Friday evening a deal had been struck and draft Contracts were signed and exchanged with FTL FUTBOL to take over the sponsorship with the title of the League changing to ‘FTL FUTBOL’ Hellenic League.

1.11.08 JF Junior Sheild Rd 2 - Two Rivers 4 v 0 Carterton A

Two Rivers hosted the new side of division 4 Carterton "A" in the JFO Junior Shield on a very wet and windy day at Bampton rec. Rivers started off by far the brighter side but didn't really trouble the Carterton defense.
Two Rivers grabbed their first goal which was very fortunate, Luckaz Jeziorski crossed the ball in which seemed to loop and hang in the air for ages, the ball was touched onto the crossbar and on the way down hit Peter Hanley on the back of the head (not sure how much he knew about it) and into the net. 1-0.
Rivers continued to create chances the best chance fell to new signing Martin who turned past the defender and struck on the half volley only to be denied by a great save by Steven Hocknail.
Leigh Butler had a great chance when he was through on goal and hit a great shot but his shot bounced off the underside of the crossbar and was cleared by the carterton defense.
After going 1-0 up neither team really created any serious chances, towards the end of the half Carterton had a good spell where they had a few free kicks in dangerous territory and corner kicks but never really came close to scoring.
Half-time: Two Rivers 1-0 Carterton A.
Two Rivers got off to a very sluggish start in the second half and always looked second best. Carterton did not really create any serious chances as the Rivers defense held firm. Carterton had a few corner kicks but these were dealt with.
Martin Dudzinski volleyed away the loose ball that came to him in the penalty area which then gave the Rivers midfield time to get the ball on the floor and play the ball into Peter Hanley's path who forced his way into the penalty area and strike the ball into the corner to put Rivers 2 up!
Luckaz Jeziorski came close after great play by substitute Justin enabled him to run into the penalty area but again to be denied by another great save by Steven Hocknail.
Luckaz did not have to wait long to score as goal number 3 came with about 15 minutes left, Luckaz struck the ball into the top corner after Carterton failed to clear the ball in the penalty area.
Rivers made the last 5 minutes comfortable with a 4th goal courtesy of a brilliant free kick by Paul Oakey which then saw Leigh Butler find himself through on goal and hit a superb shot low into the far corner.
A great performance by everyone in the end and nice to get a clean sheet!
Well done to all. Special mentions must go to Paul Oakey who was outstanding in defense and our two wide men who worked the flanks. Carterton keeper Steven Hocknail was by far the best player on their team who made some great saves and showed good handling.
Rivers will hope to go a step further in the next round and know they are in for a real test in whoever they oppose next. match report taken from W&DMFL Web site - Michael Burke - Two Rivers FC
